Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Glabrous and glaucous perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems 5–10 dm long, unbranched, reproducing vegetatively by adventitious shoots from the base.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled usually 3 per node. Blades subcylindrical, 3–15 cm long, 0.3–0.6 cm wide. Lower surfaces sulcate, often spotted with reddish brown; often deciduous at anthesis. Margins near apex with 3–9 conical teeth between which spoon-shaped bulbils are produced. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in corymbose cymes 10–20 cm wide, each one pendent on pedicels 0.5–2 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), erect, 4-merous. Calyx of 4 sepals, connate, the tube 0.3–0.6 cm long, the lobes triangular, 0.5–0.7 cm long. Corolla of 4 petals; petals distinct or sometimes connate near base. corolla tubular, constricted above the ovaries, 4-lobed, orange to scarlet, 2.5–4 cm long, the lobes obovate, 0.5–1 cm long. Stamens (4)8; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, carpels 4 (connivent), erect, (nearly distinct); base tapered; styles mostly 2+ times shorter than ovary.

Fruit: Follicles. Seeds minute; endosperm scanty or absent.

Ploidy: 2n = 68

Habitat: Naturalized in low elevation dry; disturbed sites; cultivated and perhaps naturalized on some of the main islands.
